Your host at Easterhoull Chalets

As a native Shetlander, Sarah has always felt a deep emotional connection to the Shetland Islands, Scotland's most northern islands. This archipelago in the North Sea has been a constant source of inspiration for her artwork, reflecting the dramatic landscapes, dark winters, bright summers, and wild and windy weather that characterize the region.

Growing up on an island called Whalsay, Sarah's childhood was filled with explorations along the Shetland coastline. She would spend hours discovering treasures like shells, stones, sea glass, and pottery. Even today, she continues to enjoy the simple pleasure of beachcombing, and many of the unique items she collects now find their way into her artwork.

Now residing in Scalloway, Sarah's journey as an artist was further fueled by the vast, untamed space that once surrounded her house. Aptly named Highlands due to its challenging slope and breathtaking views, she took it upon herself to design and create a textured and multi-level garden. Just as she approaches her artwork, Sarah carefully considered the size, shapes, and textures available to her, choosing specific plant combinations that would harmonize with the layout. Her extensive knowledge of growing and caring for plants in Shetland's unique conditions enabled her to select the most suitable Shetland plant species for the space.

In her Scalloway studio, Sarah meticulously crafts each piece by hand, utilizing a blend of epoxy resin, metallic pigments, and acrylic paint. The use of resin ensures that her creations are durable and long-lasting, capable of withstanding the test of time. With proper care and maintenance, her seascape artworks will retain their captivating beauty for years to come, allowing owners to cherish a piece of Shetland's essence captured within these artful creations.

Through her artwork and her garden, Sarah embraces the essence of Shetland, capturing its rugged beauty, its interplay of light and dark, and the raw power of its surroundings. Her deep-rooted connection to her homeland shines through in every brushstroke and garden design, inviting others to experience the enchantment of the Shetland Islands through her artistic expressions.
